In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to neglect our health amidst our myriad responsibilities.
However, there's an urgent need to prioritize preventive healthcare by advocating for regular screenings.
Inspired by the teachings of Peter Attia, a renowned longevity medicine doctor, I believe that understanding the "Four Horsemen of Illness" can empower us to take proactive measures and potentially save lives.
Attia's concept of the Four Horsemen represents four critical medical conditions that, if left undetected or untreated, can ravage our well-being.
These horsemen are:
1. Cancer
2. Cardiovascular disease
3. Dementia
4. Diabetes (Type 2)
Each of them poses a significant threat, silently weaving their destructive tapestry until it's often too late to intervene effectively.
As I sit here writing this blog, I am awaiting the results of a deep excision for a malignant melanoma. Melanoma was picked up early and if all goes according to plan, this screening would’ve saved me from a very nasty few years of chemotherapy / scans and possibly a slow death.
Cancer casts a long shadow over countless lives, relentlessly progressing until it reaches a critical stage. Screening tests such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and Pap smears offer a window of opportunity to detect cancer in its nascent stages, greatly improving the chances of successful treatment and survival. One of my dear friends was late in picking up a renal cell carcinoma and if picked up late, the survival rate of these cancers are low. I vowed that I would work on a solution to help pick up more of these and make sure people in our program are screened early for these types of diseases. We will guide you as to the most common occurring cancer in your age, gender.
Cardiovascular (Atherosclerotic) Disease: The Silent Assassin:
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide. What makes it truly insidious is its elusive nature, as symptoms often manifest only when the damage is severe. By encouraging people to undergo regular screenings, we can detect warning signs early on, enabling timely intervention, lifestyle modifications, or even life-saving treatments. We add to this heart disease, stroke, which has much the same etiology (base reason).
Dr Shaun also found out the hard way that early screening and prevention is key. He had the unfortunate event of having a cardiac stent fitted at the age of 42 years old. This should never have been, if screened properly he would’ve had the values to know that he could still do much to prevent him needing a stent at that age.
Dementia: Preserving Cognitive Vitality
With an aging population, dementia has emerged as a pressing public health concern. Screening for cognitive decline through neuropsychological assessments and brain imaging can aid in early diagnosis, enabling the implementation of interventions that may delay disease progression and improve the quality of life for individuals and their families.
I have a mother with end-stage dementia. This has been devastating for her and for the family that stays behind.
Diabetes -Unmasking the Silent Epidemic:
Diabetes, type 2, has reached epidemic proportions, silently wreaking havoc on our bodies. Regular screenings such as fasting blood glucose tests and HbA1c measurements can identify those at risk or already affected. Early detection offers the chance for lifestyle modifications, medication management, and prevention of complications.
Our screening program goes one step further and identifies low level of inflammation early. This stays our fight, the low level of chronic inflammation that wreaks the havoc on our inner bodies.
The importance of regular screenings lies in their potential to transform our approach to healthcare. By identifying health issues in their infancy, we can shift the focus from treatment to prevention, thus improving outcomes and reducing the burden on healthcare systems. Early detection saves lives, preserves vitality, and empowers individuals to take control of their health.
In the spirit of Peter Attia's teachings, it is our responsibility to raise awareness about the urgent need for medical screenings. By understanding the Four Horsemen of Illness and advocating for preventive healthcare, we can proactively combat these insidious conditions.
Let us embrace a future where early detection and intervention become the norm, allowing individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Our InnerSight program will shed light on the Four Horsemen, but we also go a few steps further in assessing family history, Diet, Sleep, fitness, added to the necessary blood tests.
